Comprehension Discussion

Dear Summer School Students,
We have been studying visualization, connections, and asking questions this summer. There are more comprehension strategies, but let's focus our discussion on these three. Please share your thoughts about each strategy and how you've applied it to our read alouds. Today we read Three Questions. Let's start with a discussion of Three Questions.

When I listened to the book Three Questions, I used the making connections strategy. Making connections is the same as Schema. It's when you make connections to your life, another book, or even the world. This book is about a boy named Nikoai. He had three questions that he thought would help him with how to act or behave.

The questions were:
When is the right time to do things?
Who is the most important one?
What is the right thing to do?

My connection is text to text. Actually it's really text to movie. In the book, Nikolai saved the panda's baby in spite of the storm. In the movie I saw, several hikers were climbing to the top of Mt. Everest. It's a very dangerous and difficult mountain to climb. They stopped to save a climber who was going crazy. He had even taken off his coat and gloves. He almost fell off of the mountain. A fall like that would certainly end in his death. The group of climbers decided to help get his jacket and gloves back on and strap him down to carry him down the mountain instead of finish their climb to the summit. Since they chose to take him back down the mountain, they'd have to give up getting to the top of the mountain that year. They were truly good hearted people. Nikolai put his life in danger by going back out into the storm to save the panda. The climbers didn't go back into the storm, but they did give up reaching the summit.

I can't wait to hear some of your connections.

Nikolai chose to go save

When I listened to Three Questions, I used Schema or making connections. My text to text comparison was with the book the The Great Kapoke Tree and The Three Question they both have talking animals. They both save something. Nikolai in the Three Questions books saved the panda's life during the storm. The man sleep near the Great Kapoke tree saved the tree by not cutting it down. He also was helped by talking animals just like Nikolai.

When I read The Three Questions I pictured the panda being under the tree branches. Or even under all the leaves. But when I saw the picture it was better than what I imagined. I did a visualisation. I saw the panda stuck under the branches. I could hear the rain falling down and drenching the panda. I cringed as the lightning struck. I could smell the freshness the rain left behind.I could feel the cold water dripping. I could feel the rain pounding down on me like little pellets all over.

When I read the book Three Question by Jon J Muth. I visualised when the penda got injured by a tree that had fallen from the storm. Then the kid saved the panda that was injured by the tree that was on his leg. I could imagine how the baby panda felt. He might not have been able to feel his leg except for the pain. I'm frightened and sad that my mother isn't here. I can see what the baby panda can see. The baby panda sees darkness, because he's in the woods and it's dark. The rain is coming down hard. It sounds like thunder, lightening, and sound of the rain that is dropping on the trees.

When I listened to Three Questions I used schema text to text
when the panda bear injured his
leg when he fell from the tree, I saw a movie when a little boy injured his leg. This connection helped me understand the story, because. Both the boy and panda felt pain and alone. The movie was called When a Boy gets Hurt.

When I listened to the book Three Questions, I used the strategy of asking questions. When the boy was talking to the turtle about his three questions I thought What will this be about? It ended up beign about a boy who wanted to act better. He talked to three animals. The animals helped him ask three questions that he had about how to act. The animals were a monkey, a bird, and a dog. The turtle helped Nikolai, but having him dig a hole. If he hadn't of dug the hole for the slow moving turtle, he wouldn't have found the hurt panda. Finding the hurt panda and her baby helped him answer his other 2 questions.

When I listened to the book Three Questions I used the strategy schema. I used test to self. When Nikolai was out during the storm, I remembered how bad a storm can be. Once my mom, my dad, my brother, my sister and myself had to go to a shelter during a storm. The shelter helped us stay out of the weather. We didn't want to get hurt by the tornado. When Nikolai went back out into the storm I thought it was a bad idea, because he could get struck by lightening or injured some other way.

Dear DK,
When I read your comment about using schema. I thought it was very nice. It made sense, because when you said that baby panda felt like the boy in the movie, I felt like they both got hurt the same way. Was there a storm in your movie? Did someone save the boy in your movie?

Dear JW,
When you wrote I liked it when you said that you went to a shelter during the storm. You said that Nikolai could have got hurt durign the storm or struck by lightening. If I were Nikolai I would have went into the storm too, but I would have asked the turtle if he had an umbrella.

Dear JW,
I like your story it was
cool. You used schema text to self, because you were in shelter. I remember the tornado and I think it was a bad idea for Nikolai to go outside during the storm. I think the panda might have been OK, because animals are sometimes outside during a storm and they know how to keep safe. People should be in shelters.

Dear RC,
I could really visualize the scene from the book. I think that visualization is why some books are better than the movies. Of course, I just like to see the movies to see if the pictures in my mind match the pictures that the producer of the movie decided to use. In Harry Potter, I definately didn't think that the Quidditch field would look the way it did the movie. I had imagined a much larger field with an animal as the golden snitch. I liked the castle and the train better in the movie, but I definately like the pictures of the trading cards that I had pictured in my mind.

Today I used visolied and schema in the book HUMMNED ALI.The part that I used vislising was for the part that said that he got on the bus and the bus driver asked him if he was fifve years old and he was acshly three years old.I also vislied the part that said the part that he was going to be a good boxser or a fighter. The part that I used schema was when they said that he grow up fast and I grow up fast too.I also made a connetion to text to movei because I have seen a movei that also had a boxser and the boxser in the movei was also a good boxser the boxser was a girl and she became a champion.

Dear EG,
I made connections to Everybody Cooks Rice, too. I could imagine all the kinds of rice my family has eaten. My favorite kind of rice is Spanish rice. Have you had Spanish rice? What other kinds of rice have you eaten?

Today I used visholising for the book Chato Kinchen. The part that I used visholiding for this book was the part that the bird flew into the tree when the bird herd the cat walking beside the fenc and the cat was swing its tail back and forth.I also used schema connestion for text to self because when I go to Mexsico my ant envits us to eat at her house and when our famlies come to Kansas we envite them to our house to eat what we have or what we make.Sometimes they bring something to jest like the book that we read today.
